OPD Waterford University Hospital

Project Information

University Hospital Waterford needed extra outpatient space quickly. Firstly, the modular outpatient building provided a fast, safe, and modern solution. P McVey Building Systems designed, manufactured, and installed the facility using offsite construction, which minimised disruption. As a result, the hospital could meet rising patient demand efficiently.

The 960m² building consists of 32 steel-frame modular units, which connect seamlessly to the hospital layout. In addition, it features a reception area, waiting room, two assessment rooms, two treatment rooms, sixteen consulting rooms, and four utility rooms. The team installed all mechanical and electrical systems after positioning the modules. This ensured smooth integration with the hospital’s existing infrastructure. Daily hospital operations continued throughout construction. Meanwhile, staff coordinated access routes and crane activities to protect blue-light paths. They also tested radio systems to avoid interference with hospital communications.

Offsite Solution

All 32 modules were manufactured in a controlled factory. Firstly, this approach improved quality and shortened the programme. Next, it reduced the number of staff needed on site, which improved safety. Meanwhile, the site team prepared foundations and service connections. Once the modules arrived, the team positioned them carefully to maintain patient flow and emergency routes. In addition, the building includes gas-powered radiant heating, heat-recovery units, LED lighting with PIR sensors, and 22 kW of solar panels to cut energy use. Finally, the hospital gained a fully compliant, modern outpatient facility without disrupting daily services. As a result, the project delivered high quality, efficiency, and safety throughout.
