Bailieborough Community School

Project Details

A new modular building for classrooms was required at Bailieborough Community School, Co. Cavan, due to the school’s isolated location. The large post-primary school needed an offsite solution to meet its growing demand. Additionally, the Department of Education required classroom provisions for 40 schools across the Republic of Ireland to accommodate the country’s expanding population.

Work began during the school holidays, ensuring no disruption to the ongoing academic year. Consequently, this allowed preparations for the new school year to proceed smoothly. The four classrooms were designed to accommodate an additional 120 students, effectively and efficiently meeting the school’s needs. As a result, the modular building provided a fast and effective solution to expand educational capacity at Bailieborough Community School.

Offsite solution

P McVey Building Systems was appointed as the main contractor for this project and worked closely with the Department of Education to provide additional modular classrooms.

Given the growing local population and the increasing demand for extra classroom space, Bailieborough Community School required a quick turnaround. In particular, the ongoing threat of Covid-19 added urgency to the need for additional space. As a result, the modular solution enabled the school to expand swiftly, ensuring that the educational needs of the community were met effectively. Therefore, the project successfully addressed the immediate space requirements in a timely and efficient manner.

Facility

The fully NZEB-compliant modular building delivered 4 classrooms, each accommodating 30 students, along with a restroom that includes disabled access. Additionally, it provides a new learning facility, offering flexibility between classrooms for the upcoming school year. As a result, this solution allows the school to easily adapt to changing needs while maintaining high standards of accessibility and energy efficiency. Moreover, the design ensures that the school is well-equipped to handle future demands, providing a sustainable and versatile space for both students and staff.

Project Overview

The project included groundworks and 10 steel frame modules, which were manufactured offsite. Internal electrics and plumbing were then installed onsite during the final phase.

P McVey Building Systems completed all site work, including soft and hard finishes, drainage, substructures, and 900m2 of tarmacking. As a result, the overall landscape of the location changed dramatically, creating a safer environment for students.

Furthermore, integrated design partners ISD, Ivan Scott Associates and MMA Architects played essential roles in the project, ensuring that the program ran smoothly from start to finish. Consequently, their collaboration was crucial to the project’s success.

Timescale

Timing for this project was paramount, and a strict program ensured that the team met the deadline on time for the upcoming school year. Specifically, the team installed the modular classrooms in August, completing internal work alongside the program. As a result, the team successfully handed over the project one week before pupils returned.

Additionally, the team designed the bespoke project in-house and manufactured it offsite, meeting specifications within a 12-week period. Furthermore, this efficient approach allowed the school to be ready for the new school year without delays.

Customer Perspective

Bailieborough Community School was delighted to receive a 4-classroom modular building at the beginning of the new academic year 2021-22. At the start of the project, we were assured that the building would be delivered on time and ready for students and teachers in September. Fortunately, we were not disappointed; we now have 4 bright new classrooms, each capable of accommodating 30 students.

The company completed the building to a very high standard, and the team proved very easy to deal with throughout the process. Additionally, they have continued to offer support even after completion. Ultimately, the new classrooms have been a great addition to the school, providing us with the necessary flexibility when timetabling classes. Therefore, we would have no hesitation in recommending P McVey Building Systems to anyone looking to invest in modular buildings.
